My Greatest Accomplishment
As an occupational therapist, my greatest accomplishment happened when a patient with a brain injury stood for the first time because he was determined to hug me before leaving the hospital. He and his wife cried and thanked me for “bringing positive energy, determination and joy” during a very hard time. This patient originally was not interested in therapy and wanted to “give up.” I am beyond thankful that he didn’t. As a professional swimmer, my greatest accomplishment was making the United States National Team and being able to represent the U.S. in competitions; having a sense of pride competing for our country is something I will never take for granted.
How Drexel Helped Me
Drexel helped me develop tenacity to work hard for my goals. With the quarter system, I learned how to absorb information and apply it very quickly to academics and life. This is something I needed to learn to succeed. Drexel also taught me how to be adaptable, which I use daily with my patients’ schedules and my own calendar for practice and competition.
Where I Hope to Be in Five Years
I would love to take steps toward opening my own gym for those with disabilities and continue teaching individuals how life looks post-injury. After hospital/rehabilitation, a lot of patients are lost when it comes to maintaining strength without a therapist. I want to build a program for them in an accessible place.
How I Pay It Forward
I currently teach swim lessons and lead clinics designed to strengthen individuals’ determination to reach their goals, whether swimming or non-swimming related. I love talking with younger people and motivating them to pursue their passion. I also hope to teach occupational therapy students one day!
