Chief Academic Officer, PA Virtual Charter School

Shaikha BuAli, 37

From special education classrooms to statewide leadership, Shaikha BuAli now oversees academic programs for more than 3,000 virtual students across Pennsylvania.

Although Shaikha BuAli works in education, her vision of success extends far beyond the classroom. “I lead with the goal of preparing every student not just for graduation — but for life,” she says. Her career journey began as a special education teacher in the School District of Philadelphia, where she recalls long hours devoted to helping students with emotional and learning disabilities. Over the past decade, she’s held progressively senior leadership roles in the public education sector. Today, she serves as chief academic officer at PA Virtual Charter School, overseeing academic programming for more than 3,300 K-12 students across Pennsylvania. In this role, she mentors a team of 10 senior administrators, including principals and directors. She also ensures compliance with the state’s Department of Education and federal programs, and the development and implementation of strategic initiatives. With an eye toward student success beyond the classroom, BuAli has championed the school’s Student Advancement and Development Program, which includes the Career Development and Pathways Program, an initiative that helps young people envision their futures as agile, creative thinkers equipped with the versatility to navigate an evolving global landscape.

“Whether they plan to attend college, enlist in the military, enter the workforce or pursue a unique entrepreneurial path, we provide the tools, partnerships and mentorship to help them succeed.” Shaikha BuAli

As a longtime advocate for youth empowerment, BuAli also serves as board chair at Camp Jamison, a nonprofit overnight summer camp that creates inclusive and affordable experiences for Philadelphia youth. Far more than a traditional outdoor retreat, the camp serves as a critical violence prevention initiative, using trauma-informed practices to create a safe, inclusive and restorative environment. Extending her dedication to community into her personal life, she has opened her home to Bahraini international students studying far from family, providing a support system during holidays and school breaks. And she credits her Drexel experience with setting her up for success. Her doctoral dissertation, titled “A Qualitative Case Study on Instructional Practices in a Pennsylvania Online Middle School,” became a foundation for helping educators design engaging, effective virtual learning environments — which became crucial during the Covid-19 pandemic, when she stepped in to help schools, teachers and entire districts pivot to online learning. “This wasn’t theoretical work. It was real, practical insight designed to support educators in one of the most challenging moments of their careers,” she says.

In her own words…

My Greatest Accomplishment:

Since earning my doctorate in educational leadership and organizational management from Drexel in 2020, I have expanded opportunities for students through education, science and community service. At PA Virtual Charter School, I oversee academic systems that ensure equitable access to high-quality instruction across Pennsylvania. As board chair of Camp Jamison, I guide trauma-informed and violence-prevention programs for youth in the Greater Philadelphia area. Through my work with the GLOBE Program and other science nonprofits, I support international initiatives connecting STEM learning to service and career pathways. Balancing these professional responsibilities while raising three daughters has strengthened my resilience, adaptability and commitment to leading with purpose.

How Drexel Shaped My Path:

Drexel provided me with a practical foundation to lead complex educational systems with confidence. The emphasis on experiential learning and strategic leadership prepared me to align policy, instruction and innovation to create real impact for students. Completing the Superintendent Letter of Eligibility prepared me to assume high-level academic and organizational responsibilities immediately after graduation. Drexel’s focus on civic and global engagement shaped my approach to leadership locally and internationally. These skills and perspectives continue to guide my work, ensuring mission-driven decisions that serve students, families and communities.

Where I Hope To Be in Five Years:

In five years, I hope to have an even greater impact in education, youth development and community engagement while serving as a role model my daughters can be proud of. I aim to mentor and train more emerging leaders, helping them create meaningful change. I plan to expand partnerships between schools, nonprofits and international science programs to grow STEM and career opportunities for students while promoting equity. I hope to influence systems and policies that support trauma-informed education and violence prevention, giving youth the resources to thrive. Ultimately, I want to build sustainable systems and inspire others to lead with purpose, amplifying impact locally, nationally and globally. DM
