Architectural & lighting designer, The Lighting Practice (Philadelphia)

My Greatest Accomplishment: My professional endeavors have led me to projects sited around the world, from Abu Dhabi to New York City, however I am most proud of my projects located here in Philadelphia. Viewing the coordinated lighting solutions across the city skyline from the Schuylkill River, it is nice to know that I have had a part in shaping this beautiful city. I like to think my efforts have made life a bit brighter for the community of Philadelphia. They say that if you are not moving forward, then you are standing still. I actively pursue opportunities that push me out of my comfort zone in order to grow as an individual and as a professional. My consistency has led to three intertwining and rewarding career paths; in architecture, lighting and education. I encourage this approach to my students at Drexel, where, among other things, I advocate daily sketching to hone their craft and observation skills.

How Drexel helped me: During my time at Westphal, I had the privilege of studying under the instruction of fantastic professors who would later become mentors and colleagues. In addition to professional and academic support, my time at Drexel has also provided me with long-lasting friendships and introduced me to my greatest support system to date, my partner Dan. I would not be the designer or educator I am today without the guidance of the Architecture Department at Drexel.

My Greatest Source of Motivation: My late father always said, “You don’t receive what you don’t ask for.” In our brief time together, he perpetuated a strong ethos and work ethic which motivates me to persevere. He was a force to be reckoned with in his community. And he taught me that life is too brief to stow away dreams, and it is always better to pursue your goals.

Where I Hope to Be in Five Years: I hope to continue teaching in the Architecture Department at Drexel. Whether it be teaching young professionals the technical aspects of lighting design, the aesthetics of architectural representation, or perhaps leading an intensive study tour of Finland. I plan to strengthen my ties to the West Philadelphia community through volunteer efforts with Bartram’s Garden. Professionally, I aspire to continue working alongside talented designers for motivated clients to offer a holistic design approach which includes architecture, lighting and sustainable design.
