OPERATIONS MANAGER, EL BOUSHI FOODS

Youssif Galal of El Boushi Foods is an alumnus honoree of Drexel Magazine's 40 Under 40 Class of 2026.

Youssif Galal built a food manufacturing company from the ground up, exporting frozen produce to international markets.

When Youssif Galal returned to Egypt after earning his mechanical engineering degree from Drexel, he didn’t step into a ready-made job — he stepped onto a vacant plot of industrial land his father had quietly purchased while he was abroad. That empty stretch outside Cairo would soon become the foundation of his future. After months of discussions and many late-night brainstorming sessions, the idea emerged to address the need for food manufacturing, especially frozen fruits and vegetables. Egypt is one of the top agricultural producers in the region, but much of the value-added processing happens elsewhere. There was a gap to be filled. To seize on that opportunity, Galal would need to manage not just real estate and construction, but also the nuances of food manufacturing — regulations, cold chain logistics, hygiene standards, export requirements. “This was when I really began to lean on what I learned at Drexel,” he recalls.

“At Drexel, I learned how to work under pressure, how to think critically and how to build something real.”

Drawing on that solid foundation, Galal worked on the ground every day, from surveying and trench digging to overseeing equipment installation and to later production trials. Two years later, the facility is fully operational and continues to grow. It has received BRCGS food safety certification — the “gold standard” for food manufacturers — which opened up new international markets. With a team of over 50 employees, Galal’s frozen fruits and vegetables are now being exported to Europe, the Gulf and beyond. “I realize how much Drexel prepared me for this. It wasn’t just the classes or the textbooks. It was the whole ecosystem: The fast pace, the emphasis on practical work, the culture of pushing forward,” he says. “At Drexel, I learned how to work under pressure, how to think critically and how to build something real.”

In his own words…

My Greatest Accomplishment:

My greatest accomplishment is co-founding and operating El Boushi Foods, taking it from a single idea through construction, team recruitment and full-scale operations. I led the project through every stage of development, ultimately reaching global markets and exporting Egyptian agricultural products worldwide. Building a company that connects local farmers to international markets while maintaining quality and efficiency has been both challenging and deeply rewarding. It represents my commitment to leadership, innovation and global impact.

How Drexel Shaped My Path:

As a mechanical engineering major, my education and co-op experience provided a strong foundation in problem-solving and systems thinking. The co-op program exposed me to the industrial and operational side of engineering, giving me insight into how ideas are executed at scale. That hands-on perspective shaped how I approached building and managing El Boushi Foods today. Drexel helped transform my ambition into a practical and achievable vision.

Where I Hope To Be in Five Years:

In five years, I hope to continue expanding El Boushi Foods as a global platform for Egyptian agriculture. My goal is to elevate Egypt’s agricultural products to the recognition they deserve while providing safe, healthy and high-quality produce worldwide. I also aim to create sustainable opportunities for farmers and local communities. Ultimately, I want to lead a company known for integrity, innovation and lasting impact. DM
