Through his dance company, Roger Lee champions urban art forms while helping emerging artists build sustainable creative careers.

In his sophomore year of college as a dance major, Roger Lee suffered an injury that required surgery and kept him away from his passion for six months. He wasn’t sure if he’d ever dance again. When he finally got back on his feet, he returned with a newfound commitment. He wanted to take his dancing more seriously, to find deeper meaning in it, and to use it to help heal other people the way the art form had helped him heal. He has brought that spirit to his performances ever since, while also helping other artists and entrepreneurs find what they need to pursue their own dreams. His eponymous dance company, founded 14 years ago, “has turned into a family now,” growing directly out of the thesis he wrote for his master’s in arts administration at Drexel, which focused on building African-American audiences for dance concerts in Philadelphia. Where most dance companies are rooted in classical forms, he found success with a different approach: “I was going to celebrate the urban art forms for the urban community,” he says. In addition to his dancing, Lee has served in a range of roles supporting others in pursuing their passions. He was an adjunct professor and assistant director of pre-college engagement in Drexel’s Charles D. Close School of Entrepreneurship, then director of entrepreneurship at both Penn State Brandywine and Philadelphia’s Revolution School.

“I was seeing arts and culture through a very narrow lens prior to my time here. There was one track to success, one way to do this. Drexel opened up my world to say, ‘No, there are 10 more you didn’t even think about yet.’”

He now coaches young artists in personal branding and career development, always keeping in mind what was missing on his journey that he could provide to someone today. “Arts education changed my life,” Lee says, adding that the most important thing he gained from Drexel was a new vision. He wants to pass on that mindset, helping to bring out the best in others. “Anything is possible,” he says. “Drexel preaches that.”

In his own words…

My Greatest Accomplishment:

Launching Roger Lee Dance Co. 14 years ago. Since then, we have presented and headlined 23 local concert series and three regional tours, performed for Grammy Award-nominated recording artists live on national television specials, performed at 6abc Dunkin’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Democratic National Convention, Wawa Welcome America Festival, and Philadanco Founder’s Day Concert, and were semi-finalists for a national performing arts award.

How Drexel Shaped My Path:

Starting and running my own professional dance company was a childhood dream that I was able to turn into my reality. Drexel gave me the inspiration and information I needed to thrive as an arts entrepreneur and an arts administrator. I wrote my master’s thesis on the role that culturally relevant themes play in building African-American audiences for dance concerts in Philadelphia. I condensed my thesis into an article that was published in the national Dance/USA e-Journal. I used my thesis research findings as the inspiration for launching Roger Lee Dance Co., producing our first local concert series and securing over 25 media features in our first year of operation.

Where I Hope To Be in Five Years:

I hope to be the CEO of a nonprofit arts organization, celebrating the 19th anniversary of both Roger Lee Arts LLC and Roger Lee Dance Co., and continuing to advance the arts locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. DM
